J. K. Rowling is a British novelist, screenwriter and film producer best known for her Harry Potter fantasy series.

The first Harry Potter manuscript was rejected by 12 publishers.


Her publisher suggested not use her real name, Joanne Rowling. They didn't believe boys would want to read a fantasy book about a boy wizard written by a woman.
 
In 1993, she stayed in Edinburgh and received welfare benefits while she finished the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
 
J.K. Rowling based the character of Hermione Granger on her 11-year-old self.
 
She wrote her first book at age six, titled Rabbit.
 
In 1982, she took the admission exams for Oxford but was not accepted. She ended up studying French at Exeter.
 
J.K. Rowling suffered from clinical depression in her late twenties, after a failed marriage and struggling as an underemployed single mom. Her experiences in this period inspired her to create the Dementors.
 
In 2004, Forbes magazine declared her the first person to become a U.S.-dollar billionaire primarily through book writing.
 
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone first print run was only of 1,000 copies.
 
In 2009, she donated the earnings of the two Potter companion books to Comic Relief (over £17 million and counting).
 
Rowling founded the international children's organization Lumos, whose mission is to "support the 8 million children in institutions worldwide to regain their right to a family life and to end the institutionalization of children."
 
Her mother died of multiple sclerosis at age 45. So when she turned 45, Rowling donated £10 million to the University of Edinburgh to found a clinic in her mother's name. The Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic opened in January 2013.
 
The names of the houses at Hogwarts were originally written on a barf bag.
